According to the survey, the German shepherd is Ohio’s favorite dog. Of the 15-plus states that have chosen the breed as favorite, the Buckeye State leads by number of states with German shepherd at the top.
But if you go nationwide, the Australian shepherd actually only narrows the gap with its German cousins, taking 7.2 % of the national market to 7.1 %.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) says that the German shepherd (as the name implies, this breed was developed from within Germany) is loyal, courageous, confident, and capable of learning commands for such activities. Therefore, the breed is not only suitable for families, but also is the most commonly used dog for police K-9 units and military support personnel. German shepherds are a hardy breed overall, but they are subject to bloat, a serious swelling of the abdomen which can be fatal, AKC says.
Growing to heights of 22 to 26 inches, they live seven to 10 years on average.

According to the survey, here are the breeds Ohio’s neighbors like the most:
- Indiana: Australian Shepherd
- Kentucky: German Shepherd
- Michigan: German shepherd and Golden retriever (tie)
- Pennsylvania: Bernese Mountain Dog
West Virginia: Bulldog, Labrador Retriever, German shepherd, boxer (tie)
